"This is absolutely a junk, and I don't know why amazon even lets it be sold here?" 2010-01-30

I bought this thing before the Christmas of 2009, more than one year ago now, when it was only sold online from either the manufacture or its authorized dealers. And I wish it was sold by amazon at that time and then I would have the opportunity to return it.

This is truly the worst electronic dictionary one can find anywhere online or in a retailer store. Here are the major problems.

1. it has an internal rechargeable battery, which lasts only for a few minutes at most. This means that virtually you cannot use it without connecting it to the charger with a heavy power adapter. To make this even worse is that it seems to have a big power leak, i.e., it won't start after only one or two days after having been fully charged.

2. it does pronounce the German word, but it sounds horrible, much worse than the sound you can find online such as:[...]. Basically useless in terms of "talking electronic dictionary".

3. it has one of the worst UI compared with any electronic dictionary. If you don't like the UI and control of a Franklin electronic dictionary after using the Sharp one, this is much worse. It has no memory about your last command, and you have to start it over from the long list of alphabet whenever you need to look up a new word.

4. it's big: 145 x 92 x 26 mm; and it's heavy: 320 grams for the device plus 160 grams for the charger, for a total weight more than a full pound.

Since I was so disgusted by this purchase, I was trying to return it, and I could never get anyone to answer my email or phone call. And this thing was with me for more than one year now, but rarely used. Otherwise, I could list more problems; but you got the picture.

I don't know whether amazon as the biggest online retailer has some minimum product quality standard, but if they do, I would suggest that they should take a second look at this product.

I noticed that this model has a high number of 850, the one I have is 800. I don't think it will be too different.

I'm a Tranditional Chinese speaker(from Taiwan) and can speak both english and spanish but not good enough that's why I bought this Chinese-English-Spanish translator.

the first 2 or 3 hours after I got this one, I can't believe this poor one why it can call "dictionary", there are many wrong words, strange words, unuseful words and simplified words (use in China) in Chinese.

and this "dictionary" say it has "approx. 650,000 words", but compare to my paper spanish-chinese dictionary ( 54, 000 words), my paper dictionary is very very very very better than the poor one.

and yes, sometimes the poor one is useful when I'm traveling, because I just need to take one dictionary with me, but for a serious language learner, its really poor, when I was traveling in New Zealand (5 month) I took this one first then I bought another paper english-chinese dictionary in there.

by the way, I bought this one about 1 year ago, I dont know if there has new version, but I dont except it....and why I didnt return this one, thats because I bought this when I was in latin america, it cost me extra 50 us dollar in post fee and I need to pay money to send it back , it didnt worth to do that......

This is probably the worst electronic dictionary i ever bought. I bought this dictionary 5 months ago and i thought its a great dictionary since they said its contains over 1 millions of words. Its true it contains over a million of word but the translation was so poor and confusing from english to vietnamese a lot of time i just tossed it away. Plus the battery only held 5 minutes so i had to charge it everytime i wanted to use it. I wish i didn't wasted $500 for it and only used 20 days.

This 'talking electronic dictionary' synthesizes English but does NOT synthesize Vietnamese! Utterly useless to an English speaker who needs to hear the intonations. You can hear a limited number of pre-recorded Vietnamese phrases in a travelers phrase book, but the dictionary itself does NOT speak Vietnamese.

Candidly, I feel the available product descriptions are quite misleading on this point. I guess you learn as you go - next time I buy a talking Vietnamese dictionary, I'll be more careful to make sure the language it speaks is Vietnamese.

I bought this for my husband and myself when we were planning our trip to Turkey. I was a bit apprehensive about going at all but after doing some research decided that the best thing I could do was to buy this translator. At least we would be able to communicate!

The reviews here weren't very helpful at all and so I wanted to write and say that both my husband and I think this is a clever and ingenious piece of work. First of all, it has a huge vocabulary. The fact that you can just carry this itty-bitty thing around instead of a big dictionary was really a revelation for us.

In the end, we were at a resort where almost everyone spoke English BUT on several occasions (in a taxi, in several shops and especially at the drugstore) we were able to make good use of it. Not only were we successful at communicating with it but also everyone we spoke to was curious to see how it worked.

So, no matter what anyone tells you, see for yourself.

"Not worth the money" 2009-10-11

I just bought the EW-S200 (it's the same product without so many features) and I bought it for 179 at El Corte Ingles in Spain. I really wouldn't recommend this dictionary because it's too expensive for what is offers. The verb conjugation mode is incomplete. And it doesn't have all the words and features that I think a serious student of Spanish would need. For instance, several translations for adverbial clauses (e.g., de modo que, a menos que, etc.) are missing. And if you do find what you are looking for, you have to click too many buttons to find an example of a sentence that uses the word that you want, without providing a quick and easy translation.

I did find, however, an entry for "para que". But this is where it becomes none user friendly. You have to punch in "para" and you get list of several "paras". Within this list, if you click the wrong "para", you have to go back and try a different "para". When you do get the "para" you're looking for, you have a list of definitions. But most of the definitions do not have any translations. So when you do find the "para" that can define "para que", there is nothing telling you that it means "so that". But you can click another couple of buttons and you will be able to read an example of a sentence using the word "para que".

One great feature, though, about the Casio dictionaries is the screen. It's very clear and you can adjust the text size. There is also a backlight which is incredibly helpful. I don't think any of the Franklin dictionaries have this (the reason why I didn't buy a Franklin). The screens of the Franklin dictionaries are very difficult to see and simply out of date.

In my ideal electronic dictionary, I could just punch in "de modo que" and get one or two quick definitions without having to punch in several other buttons. I want a dictionary that I can use to read Spanish books with on the metro or waiting at the doctor's office. A regular dictionary book is pretty cumbersome to carry around in a purse. I'm returning this little Casio tomorrow and might pick up a Franklin.

I found this company very very poor on customer care. I ordered this item, I live in Spain. Lingvobit Inc had not given FedEx the correct reference code, when I tried tracking my goods, FedEx told me this, I contacted Lingvobit who gave me a four number code, this was INCORRECT as it was not a long enough number, I again contacted Lingvobit Inc who then gave me the correct 12 number code, by which time FedEx had returned it to them. I AGAIN contacted Lingvobit Inc, who said they would refund my money when the 'goods were back in stock'!!! I THEN RECEIVED AN INVOICE FROM FEDEX FOR TWENTY EUROS POSTAGE - can you believe it. My advice is, buy another make of translator - I have!

The voice is too tinny to take seriously. Don't waste your cash & go for a basic non-speaking machine instead.

I didn't pay attention to the other person who reviewed this product and regretted it. I can confirm with everything the first reviewer said. The dictionary is horrible. Furthermore I tried to return it and couldn't. I played phone tag with 5 different companies who kept transferring me and wouldn't give me this code that I needed to return it. This code is NOT on your invoice and can only be had by phoning this company, but since no one I talked to would give it to be, I couldn't return it. They said they would call me back, they didn't. They said they would email me back, they didn't. Furthermore you only have 14 days to return it so basically I got screwed. I lost $140 on a product that is so bad I will never use it. Amazon.com should be ashamed for letting the company who made this product sell it on their site.

As the review from Yeny Bennett noted the BQF-2025 is a non-speaking Bookman card. S. Owens asks is it for sale or not. The answer is sometimes Yes and sometimes No. This is a rather old (but still usable) card that is no longer being manufactured. The newer BFQ-3033 card is more generally available. So, sometimes this item will be in stock and sometimes not. The BFQ-3033 has many times more words in it that this card. It is also a non-speaking card, but is a Bookman II card. There are 1 or 2 rather old Franklin "main units" that cannot take the newer Bookman II cards.

This card fits into several of the Franklin range I believe , but I used mine in the MWD-1450.(Since they seem to change the numbers for different markets ,this might not be much help not you.)The contents of the card were very useful and I used it a lot in France when travelling. Particularly useful is the fact that you can search ALL the conjugated forms and get back to the root verb. There are also a variety of idiomatic phrases which appear with the key words. Unfortunately there does not appear to be any other way to search for these so it is a bit of a lucky dip. You can store these and favourite words in the memory , however this vanishes when you change the battery. There may be a way to avoid this (perhaps changing the battery in under 0.5 seconds!)but I have not found it.

Overall I found the contents excellent but was less impressed with the device that the card runs in. Useful nevertheless.

"not a high qaulity device" 2007-05-16

I thought the speech tools would be very helpful. The problem is that the unit, when it arrived was not working properly. It keep locking up and not being able to display the dictionary. The company sent me a replacement and the replacemnt unit keep reseting itself and losing all of my saved items,so the hours of speech and phrases it learned it lost. Their tech suport said the unit needed to be fully charged. I explained that the unit was using AC power at the time of the failure. I tried everthing to get it to wrk as per the manufactures instructions and it still is not working correctly. It randomly resets itself still. I did try to exchange the device for a different unit or get a refund, but the company policy is 7 days from the time of receipt of the original order. So in the end I have a $400.00 unit with what I consider to have very unstable circutry. I did take the unit on our trip and it did work although I didn't invest the time in trying to save anythig. I think my money would have be better spent if I would have bought software for my PDA instead of buying this item. I would not recomend this unit for purchase, unless you like to be fustrated.

Don't buy this if you are looking for a translator that pronounces (speaks) words. It sounds like early 1980's computer voice synthesizers and the result is very poor. Enligh is my first language, and it is difficult for me to understand the English words it speaks. Some of the words, I could only understand because I was looking at the written word on the screen at the same time I was listening to the spoken word. When I tried the French words on several native French-speaking people, it was difficult for them as well. It does written translations OK. The user interface is a little bit awkward and not very intuitive.

I bought this device before I joined my schoolarship in the uinted States. it is perfect,for Arabic speakers who seek help in english terminology of their feild of study. It is not designed for English speakers wishing to learn Arabic. It has many advantages and features. My daughters use the game sections which is highly enriching in English vocabulary for a 5 year old. the voice feature was quite helpful in learning the proper pronuncitation of the words. If I couldn't find a word in the Mawrid I would easily switch to Merriam Webster with a press of a button. Very easy to use and has more in it that I haven't yet explored. It is also benefecial for Arab tourists visiting an English speaking country or France. I'm totally satisfied with it and would have even given it a 6 star!

I bought this product for my wife who wanted to learn how to speak arabic, but later found out that the dictionary only pronounces english words with a heavy accent ! don't get me wrong , this product is perfect for arabic speakers who are looking for a practical , precise 2 way dictionary , the included french dictionary is also a plus but i would have been much happier with the product if the speaking feauture included arabic as well as english .

I purchased this gadget for a trip to Russia, since I don't speak any russian.

Overall I think this translator is way overpriced. It has a very cheap

look-and-feel. The LCD screen had a minor defect right from the beginning.

The most annoying thing was the keyboard. I usually had to push a button

twice to get a response. Audio quality is also very poor.

Also beware that this thing only has a 10-day return policy. Since my trip

lasted 2 weeks, I could not return it at the end.

I think a cheap paper dictionary would have been better ...

I found data entry very frustrating because not every key-press is accepted by the system. About 10% of the letters have to be entered twice before they appear on the screen. In addition the tone signal which should signal the successful entry of a letter is not fully reliable.

I returned the unit three times to ECTACO in the hope of getting a properly functioning one, without success. Only then did a person at ECTACO admit that this problem was a "common feature" of all units of this and some other related series.

I was a bit anxious about buying this after reading the review below but decided to go for it anyway after looking around and not coming up with anything remotely similar for as good a price. I don't really need English idioms but if that's all the other reviewer found wrong with the device then I think they were selling it a bit short. The vocabulary base is truly huge (English-German, Russian--German and Russian-English) and I found everything I expected to and lots more. The technical terms were accurate and for me, truly useful as I need them for business and translations. What I think is probably the most useful function of this speedy device is the instant reverse translation. And the special phonetic spell checker was really a revelation, it helped me find some things I never seemed able to find in my regular dictionary. For that alone it was worth the modest price. It was also very cool that all the words can be spoken in Russian, German and English. It's a bit machine-like at first but I got used to it and compared to other computer voices I've heard, is very good. Now I always check the pronunciation. The only thing I agree with the other reviewer about is the case. Its definitely very stylish and every time I pull it out, heads turn. Very satisfying.

"Idioms for Idiots," that's what we call this device. We sold it after several frustrating support calls with the manufacturer, pleading for an update or upgrade. Their contention is that the database is accurate despite examples like, "Pool your leg" and "Black ship of the family" and numerous mis-translations between Russian and English words. If this is the best they can do, we ask, "What school of fish did the duraks attend?" Our advice: they should change professions, like cleaning bathrooms or grooming dogs. The only reason we gave it one star instead of zero is because the case is pretty. Save your money!

This electronic dictionary is still better than nothing, but the vocabulary is serbian, which is definitely not croatian (there exists no such language as "serbo-croatian", which is a pure fiction).

If you don't double-check lookups with the help of a native speaker, you might get into trouble because of that. ECTACO KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE, its own website is hiding this : photos are retouched so that the words "serbo-croatian" do not appear, and, worse, the presentation of the product on ECTACO's site mentions "croatian", which is a blatant lie.

ECTACO should really start thinking about making a real english<-> croatian electronic dictionary.

Apart from that, the input method is interesting, but the hardware behind is really slow, which prevents a decent typing speed and causes lots of missing characters when typing.

Everyone goes on and on about the Canon but in fact, for the price you can't get anything better than this Ectaco EJ400T model. The price truly is incredible when you consider how useful it is.

It really does do everything the company says it does and is super simple to use, which is important for me 'cause it lets me concentrate on the language. I have also seen loads of people using this at school and when we showed it to some Japanese exchange students (some of whom had those pricey Canons) they said it was quite good from their point of view. I do think that when it comes time for me to go to Japan, I will be prepared with this in my pocket. And I agree, the search by Kanji through radicals or stroke orders is very handy. Also, the Roman transcription is a huge help to my pronunciation.

When I purchased this dictionary, I figured that I was getting a good deal on a good investment, but this was not the case first. From the get go the product is dubious - The user manual contains only a minimal amount of information, not enough to guide a user through using the dictionary fully. Next off, the keyboard was more than a little faulty- Some keys would take several concise punches to register. Also, the text input method for Japanese was different than that of a regular computer, which slowed me down more than once. The English to Japanese translation was good and contained more than enough vocabulary for anyone to communicate effectively in Japanese, however, as a previous poster noted, it lumps all the translations together without any examples or context. However, the largest problem I had was the dictionary's complete incompetence when translating from Japanese to English - For this it was completely useless, it was as though the Japanese to English half of the dictionary contained no simple verbs or nouns; when looking up simple words (Words I knew I could find in the English to Japanese portion), they simply did not exist. Also, when I called Ectaco technical support to see if there was a user error on my part, the representative didn't offer any help, but simply said to send it back. I didn't have to think about that too long. This dictionary is terrible, if you need an translating dictionary, I'd recommend paying the extra amount and going with a Canon model, or even a paperback dictionary.

This is a pretty solid dictionary. It will allow a beginner to intermediate English or Japanese speaker to effectively survive in a foreign country. While it is not up to par with some of the more advanced dictionaries, it does serve a purpose.

I have been studying Japanese for a couple years at the University. I plan on heading to Japan to study more, for a year duration. I needed an electronic dictionary to help me out. The interesting thing about Japanese/Chinese, is that there are so many characters (Kanji) that even native speakers do not know all the meanings/readings/writings! Nearly everyone I talked to says they carry around an electronic dictionary in case they run into a character they do not recognize.

This dictionary is small enough to fit in your pocket. It eliminates the need to carry around a heavy and cumbersome bound-volume dictionary.

It can be used by native English speakers heading to Japan, or native Japanese speakers heading to an English speaking country. My friend works in a restaurant in Washington D.C... she has seen many Japanese customers come in using this model dictionary. It is very helpful in this situation, as the dictionary provides pronunciation (audio feedback) on the English words. This is where pronunciation is needed, due to the vast amounts of irregularities in the English language. Japanese pronunciation isn't really necessary, as the Kana are given (and Romaji), and they only have a single way to be pronounced: If you know the Kana, you can pronounce every Japanese word written in Kana.

The vocabulary is obviously not as extensive as more expensive models. But it has enough to get you through most tasks. There are lists of common questions/comments in various situations: At the airport, in a restaurant, walking the streets, etc.

There are a lot of 'extra' features on this dictionary. These include: foreign currency converter, calculators, clocks/alarms, calenders and schedulers.

They key thing that differentiates this electronic dictionary from others I looked at is the price. The newer Canon dictionaries run ~$300+. This is a lot of money to put into a small electronic item that can easily be lost.

This dictionary also comes with a 1 year manufacturer's warranty.

PROS:

- Inexpensive.

- Good for a beginner/intermediate learner of either Japanese or English.

- Search by Kanji through radicals or stroke orders.

- Spell checker allows you easy location of words you can't spell.

- Manual is in English and Japanese (some other models just have one or the other).

- 'Extra Features'.

- Phrases for common situations.

CONS:

- Not as many words as the more expensive models.

- Can have some 'false' definitions (these are present in all electronic dictionaries I have used due to the ambiguities arising from translating Japanese to English - just look at Zero Wing ^_^).

Conclusion: Overall, this is a good dictionary. If you are a beginner/intermediate student of Japanese or English and are planning on traveling to a foreign country, you will need to pick up an electronic dictionary. This model, EJ400T, should be your choice if you don't have a ton of money to spend, or if you have a tendency to misplace small electronics ;) There ARE better models (some Canons) - hence the 4 star rating - but they are all in a much higher price range (~$300+)

This dictionary sucks. I bought it last summer and it did me little good. The definitions are usually only one word, the max being 3. They lump all of the translations together, so you kinda just pick and choose with no real idea of the difference between homonyms. There's no way to actually look up Kanji but you can search with them (the only plus), however, some Kanji aren't listed under the proper radical, and you must search through lists and lists of Kanji by stroke order. I highly recommend the Canon G50. Although it is expensive, it contains extensive definitions of hundreds of thousands of words, as well as an extensive Kanji dictionary (however, Kanji definitions, meanings, etc are all written in Kana). The G50 comes with an English manual and you can switch it to an English interface so it's perfect for English speakers.

I used the Partner EF400T on my trip to Paris last week and just wanted to say that it was perfect - hence the name `Perfect Partner'! The French are not known for speaking English easily (even if they can speak it perfectly well) and this little gadget saved my skin on a more than a couple of occasions. Being as `nationalistic' as they are, I thought it would be better to keep my mouth shut :) I entered what I wanted to say and it actually spoke it out right away. The people I used it on where much more receptive to the device than me But without it I think my trip would have been sooooo bad.

This is a terrible product. The electronic voice is not understandable at all. The device is much smaller than it looks in its picture. The keyboard is tiny and difficult to use. The product is not worth the price by any means.

I returned the product to Ace Photo within hours of opening it. Since Ace charged me a 15% restocking fee, I literally paid about $31.00 just to open and inspect the product. (I also paid another $6 or 7 to ship it back.)

I then wrote a bad review about the order. Ace called asking me to remove the bad review of the order. At first I refused, but then Ace promised to refund the remaining $31.00 so I removed the negative comment from the order. I now find that Ace only refunded me $20.00 of the promised $31.00. Of course removal of the negative review of the order was "final," which means I cannot reinstate my negative comments about the order. The next time I will "see the money" before I remove a negative comment.

The only disadvantage is when the spelling card is removed, the memory of all the words he has researched and saved goes with it and he has to start over when replacing the speller after using the encyclopedia. This product is good if all you want is simplistic conjugations and vocabulary. It lacks important words which indicate context. Instead of being very specific this translator is very general. I wouldn't recommend using it in another country, you might make a fool of yourself. It would be better if it could focus on one language at a time but instead it wants to do it all at once so you skim the top of the barrel of the vast vocabulary contained by each language.

I just took delivery of this electronic dictionary for five languages. I started looking up words in English to see how they translated. No entry for "irony," no entry for "scold," not even the German word for "scold." "Scald" but not scold, in English. It is a very weak dictionary, and I would advise you to skip buying it. I was looking for an Italian-English connection. The device is for a very simple, limited vocabulary, usually with a one-word translation of the word you're looking for. I own a Casio S2000 Spanish-English dictionary, and it is superb, containing five large dictionaries. I seldom cannot find the word I'm looking for. Apparently, nothing of the sort exists for Italian-English. But don't buy this Franklin. It's slow and weak. I don't know what they were thinking in creating this thing. I will return it. I should have listened to the reviewers before me here.

This is easy to use and portable. My only objection is the omission of "objectionable" words. I find that very annoying (I don't need or want to be protected) -- but we (my wife and I) don't want to have to use two reference authorities for our games, so we live without these words that we'd find in the OED.

I'd still recommend it -- especially if ou play regularly away from your home base (the beach, etc) -- and find it impractical to drag a 20lb dictionary about with you.

"ECTACO ER-800, it's OK" 2009-10-16

ER-800 is probably one of the better translators available. This model will translate a whole paragraph. I married a Russian speaking lady and most times it is our only means of communication. The quality of the translation is sometimes a big problem, because it doesn't always give you a answer that makes any sense and sometimes it causes more problems than it solves, but without the human factor being involved in the translation i suppose it is usually acceptable. Quite often it is possible to figure out the basic idea of the translation and you get an idea of what the other person is trying to tell you. I would say that about 75 percent of the time the translation is good enough to understand completely, which is probably as good as the technology is at this point in time. Overall I would say that if you need to be able to converse with Russian speakers this is one of the better choices that is available.

Being almost the only English-Russian electronic translator freely available on the market with some serious marketing claims associated with it one might get yourselves enticed into the purchase. A big mistake. To keep a long story short this device does not exhibit any of cutting edge marvels promised by flamboyant advertisement. In reality it is an ugly, very heavy for its size, with the worst touch screen available device which represent a mediocre example of 1980s design and technology. User experience is as terrible as its design. The device is seriously slow in terms of search as well as in terms of touch screen response. The software is nothing else but a random collection of dictionaries from different sources of a different standard and layout. Not cross-referenced, not thought through... Speech recognition is a joke, as is a set of "games" and "learning features". It took us 30 min of unforgettable user experiences to archive an easy conclusion to send the fugly creature back... And that's where all the fun started. The business model of ECTACO seems to be based on "sell & run" principle with everything revolving around not accepting the device back. I won't go through worst in my life customer service experience, suffice to say the device was accepted back only after I treated to report a credit card fraud and to file a claim for suspension of Ectaco trading with a court of EU trading standards (we are based in UK). Our advice - stay away at all costs. You've been warned.

I bought ECTACO Partner ER800 dictionary last year . I used it rarely . After each use I put dictionary on charge. Each time when I use the dictionary I am suprised that the battery bar shows empty . And after I fully recharge battery, it only works for about 10-15 min. and then I have o put it on recharge again. One day I took my dictionary for work and battery was empty. I put it on charge but the dictionary battery didn't recharge. When I removed the battery from dictionary I found out that the battery was damaged.I think it is too expensive to buy a new battery each year .

This product shipped from a third party seller listed on Amazon. There was a software problem as well as a problem with the rechargeable battery. As soon as it was removed from the charger, it powered off. Repeatedly. When the seller was informed of this he said there was no guarantee on electronic products and so I was stuck with it. This seemed unfair especially since I had paid over $ 460 for it. I am a regular shopper from Amazon and I find myself at a loss about what to do.

The unit is pretty handy, but beware of this company. They offer "special deals" but do not come through on them when push comes to shove. It takes numerous emails to get any response at all. Great product, but lousy customer service.
